What would be wrong with doing the maintenance every four weeks? Before, it was monthly. Now that it's even easier to report ownership, you've increased the wipe event? Not complaining, but things do happen in real life that keep you away from the hobbies longer than you care to be. Two weeks soars by far quicker than you'd want to believe but four weeks seemed like a good settle point before. Does the server truly clutter that quickly or did you shorten the time span to keep the process fresh in your mind(trudging through the code can be slow when you've been away from it for too long)?

Just curious.

If Brendan will PM me his coordinates and perhaps a code to his entrance door and where the plot pole is, I'll scroll on it and lock it back without peeking into any inventories. You can always change the lock when you return next.

Guys here is the info again! Its now an automated system it really only needs to be done once every 29 days, but to make sure its safe we say once  a week!

How Often You Need to do This:
---------------------------------

* Ideally, once per week (to be sure you're safe!)
* This is because every day we check for ANY building NOT updated for the last 30 days - and DELETE IT.

So, you 'could' get away with updating it once a month.. ideally I'd say try to do it once a week, once every 2 weeks at the longest.

If you're going away for a while - holiday etc:
---------------------------------------------

The plot pole does NOT have to be yours - and anyone can look at your plot pole and maintain for you - so ask a friend or, as a LAST RESORT, PM an admin and ask if they can do your 'maintain area' task for the few weeks you're away.

When does this base wiping start?:

Thanks 2yys :)

Yep saved by grace - it's still every 4weeks/month... I think Brendan is just saying he hasn't been on for 2 weeks and is worried (for the first maintenance wipe we gave everyone 7 days to do the plot pole maintain).

Anyone can maintain the base by looking at ANY plot pole placed there though.

The database gets full REALLY quickly to be honest, so this step is needed to keep it all running smoothly. It only requires a player to jump on once and scroll on a plot pole, takes about 5 seconds and keeps the database nice and clear :D

The reason I suggest trying to do it once per week is just that it's easy to forget something you do once a month, that's all.

For the more tech savyy out there, this is what happens:

* Scrolling on the plotpole and selecting 'maintain area' updates a field in the database called 'LastUpdated' for each buildable onbject within 200mtrs

* Every day a MySQL event is called automatically that deletes from the object_data table, all objects where 'LastUpdated' is greater than 30 days.

* This includes vehicles - hence the putting something in the vehicle and taking it out again.

So as you can see, it's an automated process.

I'd honestly say just scroll on your plot pole when you can, at a MINIMUM of once a month, to avoid like going 1 hour over a month and being wiped. As 2yys points out, if you are sure to do this every 29 days, you'r fine.

We've even said if someone can't make it, let another player or an admin know and we can sort it for them as it only takes 5 seconds or so.

Since starting this, out objects_data table (the biggest table in the database, pretty much bigger than ALL other database tables COMBINED) has been cut down to around half, which really helps the server stay smooth.

Cool :D

Just be sure to do the plot pole scroll and put something in/out of your vehicles gear to make sure it stays :D

Is there ANY way to have the plot pole do something to the vehicles to make it so they're "Maintained" when you do the pole thing??  Like add some code like (if key=yes, pole maintains vehicles=yes)  I'm not a programmer by any means, but I kind of understand how code works.  There probably is a way, ust might be more work than it's worth to you.

I know it seems kind of lazy, but some people, myself included, have sporadic free time and trying to maintain X amount of vehicles might be outside of that time frame.  And don't give me that "Well then don't have that many vehicles!" bs.  I have them for a reason :)

Thoughts??
Give Pip something with a barrel on it, and he will slap Bitches with it.

Hey Pip :)

I could - I did consider writing a code for this...

The only issue is that there are so few unlocked vehicles on the server that new players are having a hard time finding them. Added to that, some bases have LOOOTS of vehicles (which is making us hit the max vehicle cap).

We've already:

* Increased the max vehicles from the default 150 to around 380
* Increased the max buildings from the default 150 to around 420

But still we have players wanting more building allowed on their plot and new players unable to find cars :( It seems the more we up the limits, the more players have... Which is natural, but the MySQL database size can only grow so much :D

So for that reason, we've taken the view that we're not sure if a player has so many vehicles that they go a month without touching them, is it fair on new players and everyone else.

I'm sorry you feel the issue of players having too many vehicles is a BS point, but it really isn't BS when it means it effects players and the server. What it boils down to is that if every player has lots and lots of vehicles in their base, either there will be no new players able to find many vehicles, or we continually up the number of vehicles and the server - but then the established players find a high % of them and put them in their bases, so without a limit on this, we have to keep increasing and increasing it - then the server will load slower and slower due to the objects loading on a reboot.

I'm trying to find a way to both allow players to have the vehicles they want and also allow new players to find vehicles, but unfortunately the way the Arma/DayZ/EPOCH engine works, there's no way to remove the vehicles in peoples bases from the max-vehicle count, which would have solved half of the issue.

I fully appreciate people have stuff to do IRL, but the only alternative to this set-up really is if admins manually check every vehicle on the server and remove the unused ones - Something I don't feel is fair to ask of the admins as to do that for every vehicle would take a long time... So I felt the good in-between thing would be to ask players to each take responsibility for their own vehicles, interacting with them at least once every 29 days.

Loot can be kept in safes of course - which are updated by the plot pole scroll, so it really is just vehicles that are at risk.

I do take your points on board though Pip and I will try to find a middle ground if I can :D Just we are limited by the way EPOCH stores stuff in the SQL database, but we're trying!

i would actually be more interested in a poleplot script that stopped spawns of all kinds within the radius of that placement.
